Professional recognition

You hold a professional qualification obtained abroad and want to make it count in Italy. Recognition of a foreign professional qualification is what allows you to practise a regulated profession in this country, turning the qualification into a title you can rely on before the Italian authorities and the professional orders. Here you will find who needs it, what is required and where to explore each step.

Who needs it

Recognition concerns those who have obtained abroad the qualification giving access to a regulated profession and intend to practise it in Italy, whether as an Italian national who has returned, a citizen of the European Union or a citizen of a third country. If the profession is not regulated in Italy, no recognition is required, because the qualification may be used freely. The first check is therefore on the status of the profession.

What you need, in brief

Recognition is applied for from the Ministry that supervises the profession, with an application accompanied by the qualification giving access to the profession, the documentation on training and experience and the required certificates. The documentation must be translated by an official translator and, according to where the qualification was obtained, accompanied by the Declaration of Value or by the declaration of conformity of the country of origin.

The most frequent cases, by profession

The healthcare professions, such as doctor, nurse and physiotherapist, come under the Ministry of Health, with the requirement of knowledge of the Italian language. Lawyers come under the Ministry of Justice, teachers under the Ministry of Education. Architects, engineers, psychologists and the other professions governed by an order come under the Ministry competent for the subject, with registration on the register as the final step. In every case recognition takes the form of a decree.

Where to begin

The first step is not to gather documents, but to identify precisely the profession and the competent Ministry, because the procedure, the documents and the timeframes all follow from that.

The profession first, then the documents. Identifying the profession and the competent Ministry comes before everything else, because it determines the procedure, the documents and the timeframes.
